Communications Committee
Report to the Board
February 17, 2001
Submitted by Carol Rawle

Thanks to our web manager Patrick Roehl the SFTR web site is alive and doing well. Patrick has been working on establishing a secured data base of all property owners. It can now be accessed by any property owner under the "Members Only" heading. Recently Patrick was honored for his tireless efforts on behalf of the SFTR at an open house at Rick and Carolyn Johnson's home.

The committee decided to reserve "The Preparedness Corner" for fire safety information. "Property for Sale" will be used for property owners to list their property. "Bulletin Board" can be used by property owners to list other items for sale, or to make announcements. All "for sale" items will have an expiration date.

Since the web site is currenty using only a small fraction of its allotted capacity, the committee feels that archival matter, along with "The Bare Facts" and "The Ranch Review" should be included. Pat is going to attempt to scan the material from back issues. This material had been transcribed into computer format by Morgan Flygstad. Unfortunately, since it was sent on floppy discs through the mail, the discs were probably damaged by postal scanners and now they cannot be read.

The committee was very happy with the December board minutes, both in format and timeliness. We wish to express our appreciation to the Quigleys, and especially to Lisa for the good work!

Bill Wenstrom investigated Todd Nathan's proposal for a low power FM [LPFM] radio station for the ranch. He submitted an application to the FCC in January so the ranch would have it on file if we ever decide we want a station. However, at this time, the committee does not feel that the proposed radio station addresses any urgent needs on the ranch that cannot be addressed in other ways. The recent installation of telephone lines has immensely improved communication on the ranch. When the Emergency Services Committee proceedural plans are in place, communication problems will be furthur reduced. Therefore, action on the matter of a LPFM station has been tabled. Anyone wishing a copy of Bill Wenstrom's investigative report or the FCC application can contact him.

Special thanks to Harriet Vaugeois for chairing the last committee meeting in Carol's abscence, and to Joyce Wolff for her good job on the minutes!
